10. Lying just off the coastal town of Vilanculos are the six idyllic islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago. One gets to have an experience of a paradise on earth, due to their pristine white sands, and turquoise waters. They boast some of the best diving in the world.
9. Few scenes from Blood Diamond starring Leonardo Di Caprio were shot in Maputo, Mozambique. It is this human greed fanned by a conspiracy between merchants of precious minerals in the West with African warlords. It was to foment trouble in Africa for the sake of its exploitation.
8. In a 2017 study conducted by USAID, 94 percent of girls in Mozambique enroll in primary school, more than half drop out by the fifth grade, only 11 percent continue to study at the secondary level and just one percent continue to college. As a result, the literacy rate is only 47 percent.
7. Maze, corn is the staple food. Pork and wild pig are favorite dishes and are usually prepared with sauces. Shellfish and shrimp are popular in the coastal regions.
6. In the northern coastal region and islands of Mozambique, it’s common to come across women with faces covered with a natural white mask, called mussiro. It is a natural white mask that has both aesthetic and therapeutic values. Traditionally, it used to be put on by girls who are nearing marriage-age.
5. Lake Malawi, also known as Lago Niassa in Mozambique, is an African Great Lake. It is the ninth largest lake in the world and the third largest and second deepest lake in Africa. The lake is home to more species of fish than any other lake, including at least 700 species of cichlids.
4. Most Mozambicans are multi-lingual and speak more than one language. More than 40 languages are spoken in Mozambique. Some of the biggest languages are Emakhuwa, Cisena, Xitsonga, Elomwe.
3. It has some of the world’s best coral reefs. Mozambique has some of the best coral reefs in the world, especially those lining the Bazaruto Archipelago. Over 1,200 species of fish have been identified off the coast of the country and it’s also one of the largest marine reserves in the world.
2. Mozambique decriminalized homosexuality making it one of the more gay-friendly travel options in Africa. Danilo da Silva is executive director and co-founder of the LAMBDA Mozambique, which supports the gay community. It was founded in 2006 and has 164 full-time staff and volunteers. A few clubs even offer gay-friendly nights every Thursday.
1.Mozambique is the only country in the world which sports a firearm on their flag, namely an AK-47 Kalashinkov. It symbolizes defense, vigilance, and not least the long struggle for freedom and independence. The Mozambican people were occupied by the Portuguese in 1505 and suffered colonialization for 470 years.
